Yolanda Adams Performs How Great Thou Art at the White House

The amazing song, “How Great Thou Art” seems so appropriate right now during Easter season. I have always LOVED verse three written in 1949 by Stuart K. Hine.

Verse 3:

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Jog-a-thons and Running

jogathon_childrenAs you may know, our church has a Christian school. Today is the annual Jog-a-thon Fundraiser. This is where kids  have gathered pledges for participation and/or laps run. Investment in this day is not only expected, but fun for all the participants and volunteers who help.

There’s something about running.

Running not only wears you out, but it makes you stronger — how does THAT work, right?

In the spiritual lifestyle, we MUST run! We MUST get stronger in order to make it to the end. And the big thing about running the spiritual life for God’s Kingdom is to keep Jesus in FOCUS. And to RUN!! And to NOT GIVE UP!

If you’ve been around this faith life, this is a FUNDAMENTAL — you already know this. But do you actually DO this? Do you actually have a dietary spiritual theme in YOUR life that includes this? It is truly a challenge for EVERY BELIEVER.

Prepare to RUN — get those special shoes on, get up early, discipline yourself, and by all means — DON’T BE LAZY — “Just Do It!”

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

Heart Transplant Update

It’s been nearly 3 years since Chris’ heart transplant. Chris is doing well and even though there are still challenges, he is stronger everyday.

I love this “spiritual heart transplant” verse, too!

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 36:26 (NLT)

Focus on Hope

Presidents promise hope. But so do school teachers, great explorers, and great speeches.

In 1980 Bruce Springsteen released “Everybody’s Got a Hungry Heart” and it was a huge hit.

John F. Kennedy brought hope by inspiring man to fly to the moon, which they actually accomplished.

Throughout humanity, people bring us hope through their words. But hope without purpose is somewhat empty. You can accomplish many goals in life and it can still be meaningless. That’s why God gave us HIS WORD!

We can desire to win a race, raise good children, or move into our dream home. Ultimately TRUE HOPE in life can still be missed.

The most powerful message is out there. It is found in the SON OF GOD! Jesus came to RESTORE us to our heavenly Father — and that message comes very clear when you begin to explore the words found in the Bible.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus addressed this issue of the heart to a the woman at the well who had many questions about life, too.

John 4:13-14 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

I encourage any reader to find out what it means to pursue a “relationship” with Jesus.

I have personally found that living my life with these Bible teachings in place has changed my life’s goals. Hope is now woven into every day of my life!

2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremonies

2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremony
2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremony

So many stories, so many athletes. Victory and defeat. Highs and Lows. But it all ends tonight. Now it’s 4 more years before some of these great people can try again — and for others, it truly is OVER.

We’ll have new stories and new heroes that will emerge, just like they have for centuries.

Fortunately, for someone who is following Christ — we do not have a 2 week time limit to finish strong. It’s interesting — NO TIME LIMIT — but there should be is a sense of URGENCY. And although we should be constantly moving forward with DETERMINATION, we can methodically train and consistently fulfill the planned “race” for our lives.

So STRIVE for GREATNESS. Don’t wait for 4 years to move FORWARD, but MARCH AHEAD for the greatest cause that transcends any nation!

I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Phil. 3:14 (NLT)

YouVersion’s Top 10 Bookmarked Verses of 2011

wpid-il3sb-2012-01-12-10-45.png

I’m not really sure if you have used YouVersion — but if you are into apps for your Smartphone, you probably have the “Bible” app. Actually that app IS YouVersion. It is AWESOME both on the phone and online. Here is a release they put out in January. I think it SPEAKS VOLUMES about the encouragement God’s Word brings us. It would make a great 10-week study, too!

2011 was a big year for Bible engagement in the YouVersion community. One of the ways we did that was by creating tens of millions of bookmarks. A bookmark is a great way to keep track of a verse you want to return to again and again, whether it’s because you want to memorize it, you want to share it with a friend, or simply because it’s one of your favorites. Here are the top 10 bookmarks that the YouVersion community saved during 2011*:

1. Philippians 4:6 – 123,035
2. Jeremiah 29:11 – 100,044
3. Proverbs 3:5 – 97,758
4. Romans 12:2 – 95,804
5. Philippians 4:13 – 87,120
6. Philippians 4:7 – 83,193
7. Romans 8:28 – 78,491
8. Proverbs 3:6 – 74,770
9. Matthew 6:33 – 73,544
10. 1 Corinthians 13:4 – 71,923

Encouragement – What “hope and promise” has God given you?

Pay special attention to the “for God” part in verse 23.

Got a promise God has given to you?

Hebrews 10:19-25

19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death,t Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Haiti Trip Postponed

Convoy-of-hope

With about 72 hours notice, our trip to Haiti has been postponed. Facing hurricanes, mudslides, people being even more displaced, and uncertainty has made this trip too unsafe for now.

It looks like it may be rescheduled for January, but I won’t know much more until next week (hopefully by Wednesday). I’m bummed because Convoy of Hope wanted to do this tour for about a dozen pastors. Please pray for the people of Haiti — they are pretty forgotten and times are really difficult there.

Honor

THE MEDAL OF HONOR! One of the greatest awards that our nation gives has incredible history.

Honor is empowering inspiring. There are people in my life who I often take for granted. If you ask me straight up, I would be quick to tell you how much I appreciate not only what these ones I love DO, but WHO THEY ARE. Unfortunately, I get caught up in my own little world way too often.

My wife, Ginger, is just one of these people. She is my best friend and confidant. In fact, she OFTEN will encourage me with scripture, words, wisdom, and honor.

I will miss her this weekend. She is once more spreading her wings in ministry. It seems that not only being a singer-song writer is natural, but so is speaking. She will be the featured guest speaker — 3 messages — at a retreat at Lake Tahoe. Under that beautiful backdrop — and disconnection from technology — God will challenge nearly 100 women.

So, THANK YOU, Ginger for being MY inspiration! Today, I would like to honor YOU! I am praying for changed lives and stories of spiritual victories as a result of your inspiration.

Message of Hope

Wow! Love this from “The Message” version of the Bible.
It’s a Good Thing to Hope for Help from God

19-21I’ll never forget the trouble, the utter lostness,
the taste of ashes, the poison I’ve swallowed.
I remember it all—oh, how well I remember—
the feeling of hitting the bottom.
But there’s one other thing I remember,
and remembering, I keep a grip on hope:

22-24God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out,
his merciful love couldn’t have dried up.
They’re created new every morning.
How great your faithfulness!
I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over).
He’s all I’ve got left.

25-27God proves to be good to the man who passionately waits,
to the woman who diligently seeks.
It’s a good thing to quietly hope,
quietly hope for help from God.
It’s a good thing when you’re young
to stick it out through the hard times.

28-30When life is heavy and hard to take,
go off by yourself. Enter the silence.
Bow in prayer. Don’t ask questions:
Wait for hope to appear.
Don’t run from trouble. Take it full-face.
The “worst” is never the worst.

31-33Why? Because the Master won’t ever
walk out and fail to return.

First Awakening Dream

Early this morning, just bed before I woke up there was a stirring in my spirit in the form of a dream. You have to realize that I rarely remember my dreams. But this one, I believe could be a result of this 21 Day journey that is upon us.

The dream was pretty brief – just a glimpse, really. The venue – our church, Central Assembly Church. Simply put, many people were gathered together around the front together. Music was playing quietly in the background while many people were lost in expressive worship. In this dream I can note three things they were doing.

  • First, crying.
  • Second, praying.
  • Third, “Trying” to sing, but overwhelmed by the presence of God.

In reading Isaiah 4 this morning – it all made even more sense to me.

Then the Lord will provide shade for Mount Zion (God’s chosen people)
and all who assemble there.
He will provide a canopy of cloud during the day
and smoke and flaming fire at night,
covering the glorious land. Isaiah 4:5 (NLT)

Those distracted people knew what the cloud and fire meant. That’s the way they started their REAL FREEDOM from slavery way back when Moses led them out of Egypt.

Why I Chose to Isaiah to Start

Tomorrow, (Monday, May 3) our church is beginning a 21 day fast. It can be something other than food, like Facebook, the Internet, LOST, 24, The Biggest Loser, or really anything. It’s what I’m calling “New School Fasting”. I will BEGIN by spending a lot of time in prayer and reading through the amazing book of Isaiah.

I recently saw pieces of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Sacramento, California. One of the things mentioned there was that the book of Isaiah was the only full intact scroll to be found. I was intrigued and inspired to examine this wonderful book of prophecy, promises, encouragement, and hope. I am also leaving a lot of “God” options open with this journey. We always TALK about not putting God in a box, right. Sometimes big good expectations do not turn out to be GOD expectations. So I going forward with GOD ANTICIPATION!

What are your first thoughts going forward into this seeking/finding adventure?

If you want to listen to Sunday’s message online, just click here. It will help you get/stay up to speed on what’s up. Remember you can begin or re-start your FAST at any time. But I challenge you to do your best to keep at it and really make God the center of your seek/find time.

Greg Laurie Interview – One Year Later

On July 24, 2008, Greg Laurie who is the Pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship Church in Riverside, California lost his first-born son to a tragic car accident. This devastating pain still lives throughout his family.

An excellent interview by Dan Wooding is posted on Greg’s blog. You should read it. (Click Here)

Michael Jackson Meets His Maker

mjThe news unfolded this afternoon. Michael Jackson is dead.

Michael Jackson is dead. The reports brought Twitter to it’s knees. The news channels are now on the 24/7 with it all.

Here are some quotes I heard.

  • An American Icon.
  • Another Elvis.
  • Innovative.
  • One of the biggest stars of all time.
  • A Legend.
  • Passionate.
  • A Wonder.
  • A great loss for America.

On Fox, Sheppard Smith said, “I sense that the next few days will become a true ‘American Event'”.

It is true, Michael Jackson was talented, creative, and eccentric. He was my age, so I grew up and listened to all the reports. From the publicity stunts to the tragedies of choices he made, I know he didn’t want to face death. In the 80’s he even spent time in a hyperbolic chamber in order to ensure amazing longevity.

What if you were to be surprised by your death? What if your family discovered that you were gone from this life?

Legacy, sure we all think about this. Regrets, they are ongoing in life. Do-overs? Yes, we want those, too. But the most important thing to answer is this? ARE YOU READY TO MEET YOUR MAKER? Do you know and love the God who made you to know and to love. He loves you so much. In fact the Bible tells of the peace you find when you do discover this truth. Peace in storms, decisions, relationships, difficulties, sickness, etc., etc.

Hebrews 9:27-28 And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

What is YOUr Response?

1 Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb.
2 Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it.
3 His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow.
4 The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.
5 Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying.
7 And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.”
8 The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to give the disciples the angel’s message.
9 And as they went, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they ran to him, grasped his feet, and worshiped him. Matthew 28:1-9 (NLT)

Clutter-Free Christianity

Here’s a great summary of a book I’m reading. You may want to check it out, too!

When did the Christian life become so complicated?

Your greatest desire is to please God, but with each passing week, your spiritual to-do list grows longer. As you strive to fulfill a never-ending inventory of requirements for being a godly parent, spouse, voter, employee, and more, you feel increasingly disconnected from the God you’re trying to serve.

It’s time to cut through the clutter and get to the heart of what it means to please God. In this liberating look at the core principles of faith, Dr. Robert Jeffress reveals the truth about what God really wants from you–and what He wants to do for you.

Through solid biblical teaching and practical insights, Dr. Jeffress points you toward a revitalized faith centered on becoming more like Jesus in action, attitude, and affection. You’ll learn how to partner with God in the process of spiritual transformation as you choose to follow Christ in forgiveness, obedience, trust, contentment, service, and prayer.

Through a renewed focus on experiencing the kingdom of God right now, you’ll find your to-do list shrinking and your spiritual life deepening. It all comes with embracing Clutter-Free Christianity.

Includes a Bible study guide for personal growth and group discussion.

Sad Day for Police Officers

So sad to see the combined funeral service of 4 Oakland Police Officers who were killed less than 7 days ago.

By “4 Oakland Police Officers” I mean, Mark Dunakin, John Hege, Ervin Romans and Daniel Sakai. You see they have names, family, dreams, and stories. Stories of a desire to stand against crime and for the law … and for justice.

When tragedy strikes, people may or may not come by the side of the hurting. We are all challenged by such events to remember that life is but a breath, and we should live it for the good of others. That standard of good I have learned comes from values that matter, too. These values are constantly confronted by opposition. Opposition to what God has intended for us all.

Through the good times, hard times, and even the terrible times, I am centered in my life by the example of one much better at this than I will ever be. That is my Lord and Savior, Jesus.

To the families, friends, and to the City of Oakland and beyond … My prayer is that you too will know this peace from Christ. Our prayers are with you!

John 16:33 (the words of Jesus) I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Happy New Year!

Evaluations and lists are everywhere today. Have you checked in to see what your goals in life are for the next year?

Oh, here’s a link to an article placed in the Mechanics Bank “Closer to Home” newsletter about Christmas on the Avenue. We had a standing-room only crowd as the City of Pinole opened up one of their empty store fronts. Ginger Hohm, Evie Haskell-Herndon, and Martin Cantu gave a gift to the city of Christmas music.

Family Social Networking

God meant us to be connected. We are very social. In fact He made us to love Him and to love each other.

Perhaps your life hasn’t exactly worked socially as strongly as you would have liked. For some, it may never truly change. People may or may not love you back.

I’m in the air flying to see my dad as I write this. For the past — over 20 years or so — we have not lived near each other. He’s in Texas, my family is in the San Francisco Bay Area. But there is a longing to connect, to share our hearts and to reach out to him.

I’m praying for that connection with him — from 41,000 ft. Check back. I may be sharing more of my journey about this soon.

2008 Thanksgiving Year of the “Social”

I have to agree with a lot of the favorite tech things that Greg Atkinson wrote about on his blog post. In 2008 there are three services in particular that bounced to the top for me.

Facebook

Twitter

Ustream.tv

The reason is this — making the connection — with a LOT of other people I haven’t talked to or communicated with in a long time. And you know what? I still like them!! 😉

God created us to love Him and to love others. One small way to BEGIN to love someone is to connect, interact, communicate, pray, and have conversations. In MY conversations, I want to bring hope and inspiration and to be transparent.

But when it’s all said and done
