25 Years

On January 28, 2008 my wife, Ginger, and I celebrated 25 years of marriage. We often talk of our “escape” on the evening before our wedding. We had a lot of college-aged friends and were used to pulling pranks on each one that were about to “get hitched.” The only thing was … we were next!

So we sneaked away from our Rehearsal Dinner party and headed to our favorite place, the beach. It was already dark and we took what would become my inheritance from Ginger — a Baja VW Bug — and drove through the sand along the surf line. It was a nice break with laughter — silence — contemplation about the future — and hanging out with my best friend.

We returned a few hours later to the real world. it’s amazing how THAT story is so engrained into our marriage. “This night 11, 14, 18, 22, 23, now 25 years ago …” we always begin. And we reflect upon the time that marks a milestone of beginning in our amazing journey.

Here’s to you … my best friend!

Router Lost it’s Way

The last two days I have been fighting Internet problems. We had the cable guy out who repaired wiring outside and then had additional problems with conflicts with the router. I am amazed how much we are connected around here.

I think after a couple of pretty busy days still ahead that I will have to do something to unwind again. A nice long motorcycle ride just might do the trick. Google Maps are calling me even as I type this!

Your greatest regret at the end of your life will be the lions you didn’t chase. You will look back longingly on risks not taken, opportunities not seized, and dreams not pursued. Stop running away from what scares you most and start chasing the God-ordained opportunities that cross your path. “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day”is inspired by one of the most obscure yet courageous acts recorded in Scripture, a blessed and audacious act that left no regrets: “Benaiah chased a lion down into a pit. Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it”(2 Samuel 23: 20 -21). Unleash the lion chaser within.

What if the life you really want, and the future God wants for you is hiding right now in your biggest problem, your worst failure and your greatest fear?

Story Behind the Book
“Our best days often start out as our worst days. And our greatest opportunities are often disguised as our biggest problems. You can land in a pit with a lion on a snowy day, and it will seem like the end of the road. But God is in the recycling business. He recycles past experiences and uses them to prepare us for future opportunities. That is the story of my life. And that is the story of your life. Look in the rearview mirror long enough and you’ll see that God has purposely positioned you everywhere you’ve been, even when it seemed you’d taken a wrong turn”. Mark Batterson

Bastian Legacy

Interesting day today (Tuesday). Ginger and I visited the grave sites of dozens of my family members on my father’s side. And I found out a lot of history about it. Although our name is not “Bastian” — the “Bastian’s” bought this farm land 152 years ago and started a cemetery that only allows relatives to be buried there. So that means that I am related to people who are documented and approved to be part of this family line. Pretty cool, eh?

Pictures will follow, but for now why not check out the link to the Google picture. It is in Hinckley, Illinois.

Emergency Surgery

surgeryHad a scare over the weekend. On Saturday, May 10, I felt a pain in my abdomen.

Quick summary: A small part of my intestines got “twisted” and the blood flow was cut off. I was in extreme pain and life pretty much stopped.

My wife rushed me to the emergency room, “Indy Style” and within an hour or so I underwent a CAT scan. They called in a surgical and recovery team and once they arrived I was rushed into surgery. They “untwisted” the intestinal loop, watched the purple color disappear, and sewed that piece to my colon.

This is kind of a gross summary of what happened, but the surgeon said that it was actually life-threatening and in a matter of hours could have been dramatically worse.

Thank you for all the prayers, I am doing MUCH better right now. That’s three major surgeries in the past 15 months. Time for a break. The prognosis is very good with a full recovery in sight.

God is good! w00t!

Dessert by Candlelight

Dessert by Candlelight The 2008 Dessert by Candlelight was a great success with the jazz band, LOGIC, Christmas music, and lots of chocolate and gourmet desserts.

This was the most successful event in the DBC’s history.

What a great night of fun, fellowship, and ladies getting celebrating CHRISTmas time!

Yosemite and Lake Eleanor

Tree at Lake Eleanor

I really like the way this photo turned out. It is at an obscure lake called Lake Eleanor at the north side of Yosemite. You practically need to 4-wheel drive to get to it. On Labor Day weekend (Saturday) we only saw 2 other people there besides the park rangers. In fact 3 different park rangers came out just to say, “Hi.” I think they were enjoying the beautiful day as much as we were.

Romans 1:20 (NLT) 20 From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God.

My wife, Ginger, and I had an extremely fun week of “unplugging” and just enjoying what God has made. So … where do you go and what do you do to stop and enjoy nature and all its beauty?

Ahhh, the Sierra Nevada Mountains!

Ginger and I have been on vacation all week for a nice rest. We visited Yosemite twice, went 4-wheeling and did some hiking. Wow, what beautiful creation God has created in our small part of the world.

We have seen a Bald Eagle, a huge Grey Owl sitting on the side of the road, countless deer, a coyote, and even scared a Brown Bear and sent him scurrying into the forest!

What a joy it is to enjoy one’s wife and best friend and to get away.

Still, the calling of God on our lives constantly infiltrate our conversations, prayers, thoughts, and plans. I can’t wait to see what God wants to do this fall and forward at our church and with our friends!

Today it is getting a new outfit!I am waiting for the phone call to pick it up.  It is getting a Windshield, saddle bags, a light bar, crash bars, and Bubbs Jughugger mufflers for the loud and proud factor.Hey, leave a comment … I’m looking for a name for the bike 😉

Cars for the Rich

What does a Saleen, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Farrari, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Jaguar have in common? They all cost unbelievable amounts of cash.

has an amazing article that talks about these expensive rides.

For me, I like the sporty and very colorful cars. But you won’t find me in a Pangani Zonda which aparently goes 200 MPH.

I had never heard of a Saleen, but it looks amazing!

Back Safely from Memorial Service at Corpus Christi

My family returned late-late last night from my mother-in-law’s memorial service. We had a wonderful time meeting and greeting and remembering together with long-time close friends.

If you have been praying for us during this time, we want to express our deepest thanks!

The service was full of comfort, especially considering the “no regrets” factors that were there. My mother-in-law was a believer in Jesus Christ and a Christian. What a blessing to us to know and to see this through her life. Dannie Stowe, you will be missed!

Heading to the Gulf Coast — Corpus Christi

My family and I are heading out to Corpus Christi for the next 5 days. It is sort of a working trip in that we are going to help my wife’s dad and to attend a memorial service for her mom on Saturday.

The weather looks great, Spring Break is just around the corner, and I am looking forward to seeing old friends.

The memorial service will be upbeat and kind of like a celebration of my mother-in-law’s life. She was a wonderful, caring, and accepting person. It truly didn’t matter what your life was, she would see potential and speak life into each person she met.

Psalms 19:14 (NLT) 14 May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

A Baby Funny

My wife and I – both graduate students – recently celebrated the
arrival of our first child. At my wife’s insistence, we had paid our
entire medical bill and were now worried about meeting other payments.

We
were discussing our sad financial situation one evening when our son
demanded a diaper change. As my wife leaned over the baby’s crib, I
heard her mutter, “The only thing in the house that’s paid for, and it
leaks.”

Alaska Cruise is Over Now

What a great time Ginger (my wife) and I had on a 10 day cruise to Alaska. We visited Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, the Yukon Territory, Tracy Arm, and Victoria, BC! Our group consisted of 21 of our friends. What a fantastic time we had in strengthening those friendships and just plain relaxing.

The first two nights were extremely rough at sea. We were so happy to get into smoother waters. We were able to see so much of God’s creation. We experienced whales, dolphins, seals, Bald Eagles, tons of salmon, deer, and even saw a black bear. I highly recommend you to try a get-a-way like this. 😉

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. impacted and changed our world. Although we still have many difficulties, he certainly did more than dream. But that dream helped me to be a person of acceptance and has brought many friends of diverse nationalities into my life. I was only 9 when he was killed, but the aftermath of his life is still powerful. We should constantly evaluate if we place individuals into categories and do some real soul searching if it is evident.
