United on Purpose

Pulling together is much more than general agreement. When unity is from the heart many blessings follow. Read these words from Paul, who incidentally has his share of credibility.

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Philippians 2:1-2 (NLT)

Wow!

So agreement and unity come from an overflow of knowing Jesus loves us and having Christ Followers for friends. Oh, and along the way put a check on your hearts to see if they are still soft toward one another.

Paul then says — kind of like a father would — MAKE MY DAY!

If you want to make a difference and to make him proud, do this Christian life (lifestyle) TOGETHER in love. And work very hard — like it’s your very own special project. What kind of “work”? LOVE and UNITY and MOTIVATED. Don’t be lazy (idle, inactive, remiss, negligent) about these things!

Happy New Year!

2013We anticipate a great year in 2013! I am totally looking forward to tonight when my wife, Ginger, ministers along with Linda Jackson at the her annual New Year’s Eve Concert.

What traditions do you have for the new year? Are you looking FORWARD or into the PAST? That’s always a nice question to ask around now. Chime in — leave a comment!

Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT)
No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.

Billy Graham Quote on Christmas

billy graham christmas

The very purpose of Christ’s coming into the world was that He might offer up His life as a sacrifice for the sins of men. He came to die. This is the heart of Christmas. -Rev. Billy Graham

Powerful Star Photo and Scripture

Psalm 147:4-5

He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.

How to Let God Direct MY Steps

Gods PlanWe can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps. Proverbs 16:9

I love to plan, dream, and imagine what God can and will do through my gifts and influence in ministry. And He actually designed me to do this. I am prompted and sometimes mandated in scripture to “flow in my gifts.”

When I think back to the lives that have been changed as a result of being obedient to my gifts and callings, it is so humbling. TO GOD BE THE GLORY, right?

Note this: In EVERY CASE where I have helped someone see God more clearly — there is ALWAYS a point where HE DETERMINES what happens next. It’s a personal decision to move forward in faith — or not — and when one does move forward, it is GOD, not ME that thrusts them into the strong direction of HIS ULTIMATE PLAN.

Our responsibility, dreams, organization, and gifts — turn into GOD DIRECTED STEPS. Pray right now to get out of the way and listen to the Holy Spirit’s ultimate — and sometimes last minute (re)direction and then watch GOD astound — YOU.

Salt and Straw with Old and New Friends

Salt and Straw
Salt and Straw

We were in Portland, Oregon this past weekend. It was 20 years ago that we left the Houston, Texas area for our “Great Adventure“! How nice to see long-time friends and colleagues and to make new ones as well.

We capped off our morning at Life Church, in Aloha, Oregon with a dessert at the “Salt and Straw” — they have some very strange ice cream!

Congratulations, Werner and Gabriele — and to Life Church!

5 Ways to Make Your Day Cheerful with Your Kids

Proverbs 17:22 says that when you are cheerful — an attitude of the heart — it is a “good medicine”. I really like this phrase. Generally, I am a very cheerful person. I am optimistic and happy, with a love for laughter.

When my son was young, I would have my “sidekick” right beside me. My wife, Ginger, and I would ask him silly questions that invoked silly responses. We would use him to pull harmless pranks and would have both fun real-life activities, and adventures filled with imagination.

So, want to spice up your day? Here’s a quick list to empower you to add some smiles.

1. Ask children some great questions.

Stop for a moment and have fun with this. Start with “How was your day” and then move to some more creative stuff.

Perhaps ask things like:

  • “Is there anything we can do together today?”
  • “How do you think peanut butter is made?”
  • “What does daddy do at work?”
  • “Why does the Tooth Fairy take your teeth when you lose them?”

2. Run a race
Set some goal point, give them a head-start and RUN! Remember, it’s about building memories and self-esteem —  and not about YOU winning!    😉

3. Read a story
You can make a great connection with our kids when you read to them. Pick something fun and entertaining. The put some emotion into it. Do funny voices, or have them do some.

4. Look up famous places or places you have lived on Google Earth, or Google Maps.
I know this sounds geeky, but it can be a great adventure for kids who are the right age-group. Don’t wear out your time with this one, just make some connections. Suggestions would be places like the Grand Canyon, Empire State Building, or perhaps a camp ground your family has visited.

5. Play a game
Get out of the routine by playing cards, ping pong, or croquet. You may even want to invent your own board game or card game.

HAVE FUN! Enjoy the gift of your family!

Touchdown and Interceptions the Unwavering Decisions we Make

The inconsistency of the NFL Referees has once again become the conversations of this week. (Pittsburg Steelers vs. Green Bay Packers) And though I’m those who are on the fields are trying to do their best, something is surely lacking.

We know what this feels like, right? If you have a chance, check out the first chapter of the Book of James in the Bible.

Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do. ~ James 1:8

Communion ON THE MOON

It is well documented that 20 years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon that on of the first things done by Buzz Aldrin was to participate in a private and personal communion service.

And is was extremely controversial. A famous atheist at the time, Madeline Murray O’hare was suing NASA over Bible reading from Apollo 8. So the radio went silent around the world while Mr. Aldrin had his sacred moments.

Holy Communion
The Lord’s Supper, consisting of the elements –bread and the fruit of the vine– is the symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:4 [KJV/NIV]), a memorial of his suffering and death (1 Corinthians 11:26 [KJV/NIV]), and a prophecy of His second coming (1 Corinthians 11:26 [KJV/NIV]), and is enjoined on all believers “till He come!”

Tribute to Neil Armstrong

This is a wonderful tribute to Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. Neil lived from August 5, 1930 – August 25, 2012. He is famously known for his first words, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Consumed: Heart of Worship

ConsumedWhen we come together in the corporate sense to a church service, we must remember — It is not made up of AUDIENCE, PERFORMERS, and DIRECTORS. It is not a show and was never meant to be a show.

We get it wrong so often, WE are not the AUDIENCE, God is!

Here are a few bullet points from today’s talk on WORSHIP.

When I think about WHO GOD IS AND WHAT HE’s Done?

  • I have only ONE RESPONSE.
  • That response is not just 20 minutes of song, but my very life!

MY ONLY REASONABLE RESPONSE IS WORSHIP

Hebrews 12:28-29 …since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe . . .

Thoughts: When is the last time you’ve been speechless before the presence of God? When you have been overwhelmed by His presence — because He is so big and so good and so loving and so holy and so pure and so righteous?

Remember, God gives someone righteousness who is like filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6) He (GOD) is our AUDIENCE of ONE and we worship Him with REVERENCE AND AWE!

. . . for our God is a consuming fire.  Hebrews 12:28-29

An Ooops Moment

An Ooops Moment

This was a bad Saturday morning for a lady who was driving near our house. She was fine, but looked sad. Mini Coopers are pretty cool, but don’t go very fast after landing on their roof!

Have you ever had an “oops moment”? Do tell!!

Mini Flipper

Viewed Personally by RevTim on July 20, 1969

I will never forget the late night viewing of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. I was just inches away from our little black and white tv watching Walter Cronkite’s coverage. My dad was fading in and out of sleep. But we were WIDE AWAKE when the actual moment occurred. Just me and pops in our living room experiencing HISTORY together.

Thanks, AMERICA! And THANKS NEIL for the INSPIRATION of over 50 years!

Focus on Hope

Presidents promise hope. But so do school teachers, great explorers, and great speeches.

In 1980 Bruce Springsteen released “Everybody’s Got a Hungry Heart” and it was a huge hit.

John F. Kennedy brought hope by inspiring man to fly to the moon, which they actually accomplished.

Throughout humanity, people bring us hope through their words. But hope without purpose is somewhat empty. You can accomplish many goals in life and it can still be meaningless. That’s why God gave us HIS WORD!

We can desire to win a race, raise good children, or move into our dream home. Ultimately TRUE HOPE in life can still be missed.

The most powerful message is out there. It is found in the SON OF GOD! Jesus came to RESTORE us to our heavenly Father — and that message comes very clear when you begin to explore the words found in the Bible.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus addressed this issue of the heart to a the woman at the well who had many questions about life, too.

John 4:13-14 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

I encourage any reader to find out what it means to pursue a “relationship” with Jesus.

I have personally found that living my life with these Bible teachings in place has changed my life’s goals. Hope is now woven into every day of my life!

Unconditional The Movie Official Trailer

My wife, Ginger and I previewed UNCONDITIONAL that is coming out on September 21, 2012. You’ve got to go on opening weekend! It is inspirational and a true account of events of the lives of children and those who reach out to them.

Here is the synopsis from the UNCONDITIONAL WEBSITE:
Samantha Crawford is living a storybook life: she’s happily married, she lives on a ranch where she keeps her beloved horse, and the stories she’s told and illustrated since childhood have become published books.

When her husband Billy is killed in a senseless act of violence, Sam loses her faith and her will to live. But a death-defying encounter with two children leads to a reunion with Joe, her oldest friend. Inspired by true events, UNCONDITIONAL stars Michael Ealy (Think Like A Man) and Lynn Collins (John Carter).

As Sam watches “Papa” Joe care for and love the kids in his under-resourced neighborhood, she begins to realize that no matter life’s circumstances, the love of God is always reaching out to us.
