iPad and “One Thing” Ideas

It’s kind of interesting to me… Many people are saying things like “I would not spend money for an iPad because …” and then they name one thing. But, what if you added up all those “one things” together? The value increases, doesn’t it?

So what wouldn’t YOU use an iPad for?

  • To read a book
  • To watch a video
  • To surf a website
  • To play scrabble
  • To drive a car in a game
  • To edit a document
  • To present something in “Keynote”
  • To read the Bible
  • To edit my Netflix Instant Que (and then watch something)
  • To show someone a photo — or my whole collection
  • To listen to a Podcast — or watch a video Podcast

Got something to add?

When you add all these things together… it may just be pretty useful, right? Am “I” missing something? Oh, yeah, I’m missing my iPad with 3g — it can’t get here soon enough for me!! ;-)

Preparation

worship handsI have been reading in the Old Testament of Exodus and Leviticus. One word that keeps popping out of the text is the word “prepare“. It is amazing not only how detailed the preparation was to get everything right, but the consequences of not taking this type of worship seriously. I’m absolutely convinced that during those first days and years of temple-worship experiences were entirely inspirational as people were actually following IN DETAIL what God had asked them to carry out. Unfortunately humanity began to ignore — take for granted — became bored — and actually lost the passion of preparation.

John the Baptist also did this: He prepared the way for Jesus — a way to live in God’s favor. THAT kind of favor is a a not a preparation of works, but of mercy! Now each day we can PREPARE for and follow through in worship to this King of Kings and Lord of Lords! So what are you waiting for?

Worship Teams – Dynamics – Drums

I really have to agree with Greg Atkinson when he posted that dynamics can really be a HUGE factor in leading worship. You should read his post, it’s right on. But I think the big thing for me is to watch how simple and DYNAMIC this video is that he posted by Phil Collins. I like it so much that I wanted to post it below.

Greg Laurie Interview – One Year Later

On July 24, 2008, Greg Laurie who is the Pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship Church in Riverside, California lost his first-born son to a tragic car accident. This devastating pain still lives throughout his family.

An excellent interview by Dan Wooding is posted on Greg’s blog. You should read it. (Click Here)

Apollo 11 Memories

I was THERE!! Well, not actually present with the Astronauts of Apollo 11, but as a 10-year-old boy the memories are very vivid. I had cereal box punch-outs of the lunar module (LEM) and knew exactly what would happen next. Walter Cronkite was my hero as he explained every detail in advance.

But when the live TV of 1969 hit the airwaves, I was hooked. And I watched so attentively that I’m not sure I even ate a meal that day.

I remember that everyone in my house went to bed except my dad and me. As Neil Armstrong was preparing to take that first “small step” I looked back at my dad and he had fallen asleep — Ha! I watched continuously until they had made their walk, and until the TV stations all went off the air. Too bad I didn’t have a blog back then!!

I am now streaming the exact radio transmissions and living the moments over again at http://wechoosethemoon.org. Love it!

And here’s some restored video that captures some key moments of the famous NASA team working together for our U.S. Space Program.

Michael Jackson Meets His Maker

mjThe news unfolded this afternoon. Michael Jackson is dead.

Michael Jackson is dead. The reports brought Twitter to it’s knees. The news channels are now on the 24/7 with it all.

Here are some quotes I heard.

  • An American Icon.
  • Another Elvis.
  • Innovative.
  • One of the biggest stars of all time.
  • A Legend.
  • Passionate.
  • A Wonder.
  • A great loss for America.

On Fox, Sheppard Smith said, “I sense that the next few days will become a true ‘American Event’”.

It is true, Michael Jackson was talented, creative, and eccentric. He was my age, so I grew up and listened to all the reports. From the publicity stunts to the tragedies of choices he made, I know he didn’t want to face death. In the 80′s he even spent time in a hyperbolic chamber in order to ensure amazing longevity.

What if you were to be surprised by your death? What if your family discovered that you were gone from this life?

Legacy, sure we all think about this. Regrets, they are ongoing in life. Do-overs? Yes, we want those, too. But the most important thing to answer is this? ARE YOU READY TO MEET YOUR MAKER? Do you know and love the God who made you to know and to love. He loves you so much. In fact the Bible tells of the peace you find when you do discover this truth. Peace in storms, decisions, relationships, difficulties, sickness, etc., etc.

Hebrews 9:27-28 And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

The Great Facebook Username Chase

It was on. And just like 200,000 reported seekers, I landed my new username ( user name ) on Facebook. It was fun to see all the related Twitter posts of people doing the same race to secure their unique identities.

So now, on Twitter: http://twitter.com/RevTim
And on Facebook: http://facebook.com/RevTim

I wonder if this is becoming the new “dial tone” of the internet?

Have fun and get your identity if you haven’t yet. Just go to http://facebook.com/username

I like this: The Bible has a record of it’s own type of user names. Christ Followers are written down and it’s told about in Revelations 21:23-27 (ESV)

23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and u there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But v nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

uStream – uStream.tv Media Streaming

I have a couple of uStream.tv accounts that offer free live video streaming. Since they began their services I have been interested in gathering together people and interacting with a live Internet audience.

What would you be most interested in tuning in? Interviews, concerts, Bible studies, New Media training? Something else? Would you tune in on a regular basis to something like this?

Would you like to learn how to do this yourself?Perhaps you would stream your church service or a Bible study. There are lots of possibilities. You just need a web cam, computer, and high-speed internet. Start there, then improve over time. It could be fun and rewarding, right?

Larry Norman and DC Talk

I remember being at a DC Talk concert when they did this. I also remember the first time I ever heard this song when it came out in the movie “A Thief in the Night.”

Matthew 24:36-44

36 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.

41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.

44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Praying for New Words to Express Common Bible Verses?

You gotta love this. When I was a teenager someone showed up with a Bible that used a lot of the phrases being said by the Jesus Movement. I always wanted one like that as a novelty, I guess, but I just liked the unique way words met culture.

Today I discovered the Pidgin Bible. Well, it’s not complete, but has phrases loosely translated this way. Check out a common passage, Philippians 4:6-9.

Eh, no worry bout notting! Mo betta, everyting dat happen, pray bout um, an aks God fo do wateva you guys like him fo do. An same time, no foget tell him, “Mahalo plenny!” Den, God goin make you guys hearts rest inside. Dat goin be mo betta den anybody can figga. God goin take care yoa hearts an yoa heads, cuz you guys stay tight wit his Spesho Guy Jesus Christ. So den, tink bout all dese kine stuffs — wateva stay true, wateva get respeck, wateva stay right, wateva no stay pilau, whoeva you get aloha fo, wateva you talk good bout, wateva da bestes kine, weneva peopo can say, “Dass good!” — tink everytime bout all dat kine stuff. Everyting you guys wen learn from me, everyting I wen give you guys, everyting you wen see an hear wen I was wit you guys — go do um! Den, da God dat can make you guys hearts rest inside, he goin stay wit you guys. (Fo da Philippi Peopo 4:6-9)

Hostage! Lies

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does .The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4

WHAT LIES HOLD US HOSTAGE?

LIE: GOD CAN’T CHANGE ME

TRUTH: …we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.  Ephesians 2:10 NLT

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation ; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Corinthians 5:17-18

THE STRATEGY of THOUGHTS AND OVERCOMING LIES

1. CAPTURE WRONG THOUGHTS.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

…whatever is true…noble…right…pure…lovely…admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things. Philippians 4:8

2. SPEAK TRUTH.
The tongue has the power of life and death… Proverbs 18:21

May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. Psalms 19:14 NLT

3. DON’T GIVE UP.
To this end I labor, struggling with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me.
Colossians 1:29-2:1

…But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-14

New School vs. Old School — Same Goal

Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter, and like about 100 others. All social networks, and people by the MILLIONS are embracing them.

Just as interesting is how fickle people can be. Earlier this year, Twitter was having technical difficulties. As a result, several other “micro-blogs” popped up all over the internet. In a way, that’s how we are today. Democrats vs. Republicans vs. Vice President choices. It’s a maddening race for popularity.

Facebook Graphic

Facebook Graphic

Of course, for most of us it comes down to VALUES — what do people and social networks stand for — and where do I fit into their scheme? As a Follower of Christ, I am influenced by a standard, God’s Word, the Bible. It has and continues to shape me. That message does not change or move.

I love it’s anchor. In a world where there are no moral absolutes, where rules change, and where networks of people move around so much, I need that. I have also attempted to live by those standards.

Oh, no, I am not perfect, that’s for sure. However, when I get off course I can look forward and strive toward a finish line that DID NOT move.

It can be confusing to follow the commands on the Bible. In fact there were like 1,630 of them listed. When Jesus was asked which was the most important He brought it down to a level we can all not only understand, but we can RELATE to it.

Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Now THOSE SOCIAL NETWORKS ROCK!

Dual Storms Threaten United States

August 29, 2008.

Two storms are threatening the US. An emergency condition has been declared in Louisanna and everyone is thinking about the Katrina. Katrina devastated New Orleans, in fact it will NEVER be the same.

Hurricane Gustav. Tropical storm Hannah. And today I heard that if they take certain paths gas prices could soar to $5.00 per gallon in just days!

Threatening weather, threats in our safety, threats to our economy, fears in our relationships. Where do we find hope in all this? I have learned that the truths of the Bible and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ can lead to an inner strength that others may not understand.

In a storm, you don’t just survive until tomorrow or wait until another day passes. The critical times may be minute-by-minute or one may need strength NOW! Here’s a passage of scripture that ALWAYS encourages me … perhaps another might draw strength from it right NOW as well.

Mark 4:38-41 — 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”  41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?” — ESV

Please pray for those in harms way while these storms rage on. And pray for people’s hearts once again to be stirred to compassion if needed in the aftermath of possible devastation.

The Book of John in the Bible

Incredible! That’s about the only way to describe the talk given today by my friend Jonathan Gainsbrugh. His blog is at MarkOfTheFeast.com .

The book of John is much different than Matthew, Mark, and Luke. It is often referred to new followers of Christ to get them started just after making that life-changing decision. The thing about the gospel of John is that it is RRRRR — elational. And Jonathan went through it chapter-by-chapter from the 30,000 ft. level and then zoomed it right into our hearts.

You should read the gospel of John. Check it out for yourself — it is not only an adventure, but could just get YOU really thinking about your own RRRRR — elationship as it relates to Jesus.

iPhone Will Meet RevTim on Friday

I think it’s a good match — and I have been waiting for a year for this to happen. On Friday, when the iPhone 3G is launched, I will be in line. I will pick mine up at the Apple store in Emeryville, California. It is just 10 minutes from my house or so.

I’m trying to decide what is most exciting about the new iPhone. For me, it will start out with the GPS features and the high-quality video. But the new syncing with Mobileme seems amazing as well. There will be a learning curve to get everything set up and running, especially getting things moved over from my Treo. I’m still not sure how THAT is going to work.

Any Treo to iPhone links or tips would be appreciated, just leave them in the comments.

Oh, and a little while ago I got off the phone with Sprint. They offered me a SWEET DEAL on their new INSTINCT. But I’m sure I would regret not getting that new Apple product. I’m kinda hooked on ‘em right now.

Suggestions? Comments? Are you getting one?

Everybody Loves a Duck Photo

I took this pic of a duck on the Rock River in Rockford, Illinois. More photos of mine can be found at my Flickr site. Taken with my Nikon D80. Comments?

Easter is AMAZING!

On Sunday, I will be speaking on the “AMAZING!” life of Jesus Christ. You can’t deny it. History reveals it and the Bible unwraps it even more thoroughly.

Easter_2008_webThe principles, morals, stories, and truths of God’s Word have changed my life. It’s more than positive thinking, adopting a philosophy or learning “religious” terms. When you get really practical and build a true relationship with Jesus, it MUST change you. So now, when I help the poor in a Third-World nation or when I pray for a crying girl on public transit, it makes a lot of sense.

Jesus set the example to LIVE out the life He called into. One that is all about knowing God and making Him known. Meditation doesn’t cut it, being “nice” isn’t enough, and as admirable as social work is — it is nothing — unless you introduce the love that was authored God.

So we celebrate Easter this weekend, and actually take the underlying message of Easter with us daily.

Matthew 12:23 “The crowd was AMAZED. ‘Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?’ . . .
